FLORIDA LITERARY JOURNAL REVIEWS by Claire O. Grossman

An ambitious journal of poetry and art from FAMU, CaKe evokes the youthful energy and social consciousness of its undergraduate
editorial staff. In celebration of the Black Arts Movement in 20th century America, the magazine's third and most recent
volume offers a collection of raw, impassioned glimpses into African-American history. Brimming with the politcally charged
lyricism of hip-hop and enthusiastic (if sometimes oblique) references to historical figures, this concept issue pays tribute
to its creative predecessors with vibrant introspection. Contact: cakepoetryandart@gmail.com CaKe blog: http://haveasliceofcakepoetry.blogspot.com

Now in print for over 20 years, The Cypress Dome features an impressive selection
of poetry and (even better) prose culled from the UCF student body. The magazine expresses discernible regional experiences
without the haste of specification. As if not to distract from the literary craftsmanship at hand, bright clusters of
artwork interject sporadically between written works. Thoughtful, engaging, and free of pretension, this urban collection
makes for a refreshing, substantive read. Website: http://pegasus.cc.ucf.edu/~cdome/
A biannual literary journal aiming "to publish the best poetry and prose," The Florida Review gleams with fresh
insights and excellent writing. In recent issues, the UCF-based editorial staff has included short graphic narratives, embracing
a genre that remains vastly underrepresented in Florida publications. These compelling multi-panel pieces broaden the scope
of published material, making the magazine as eclectic as it is engaging.

Sabal features selections of work from the Writers in Paradise Conference at Eckerd
College. Following the eight-day conference, writing instructors select "the most outstanding work from each workshop"
to be recognized and published in the review. Though many of the pieces excerpted from novels-in-progress feel fragmentary,
Sabal's annual collections remain thought-provoking and heartfelt.

The faculty-edited Tampa Review delivers a plucky array of writing and artwork with
smart, elegant cohesion. This biannual journal proudly showcases emerging voices alongside established writers, resulting
in a rich mixture of engaging verse and lively, inventive short fiction. In keeping with the seasoned editors' mission to
emphasize "connections to the Tampa Bay region," each issue offers a handful of decidedly local pieces, dispersing
coastal breezes and sea mango seeds among pages of well-crafted writing and artwork.
